Alpheus pseudopugnax (A. H. Banner, 1953)
Alpheus pseudopugnax is an Indo-West Pacific snapping shrimp that belongs to the Diadema species group within the genus Alpheus. It has been collected from coral rubble in the shallow subtidal.
Alpheus pseudopugnax belongs to the Diadema species group within the genus Alpheus (Banner 1953). Type locality: Maui, Hawaii (Banner 1953), types stored at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution (USNM). Type: USNM 93513.
Depth range 8-18 feet; this species has been collected from coral rubble (Banner 1953)
Maximum body size is 15.6 mm total length (female holotype) (Banner 1953). The type series showed some variation in the shape of the rostral base, ranging from a narrow/carinate base set off laterally with shallow grooves (sometimes lacking grooves), minor chela sometimes with slight spine (Banner 1953). Closely related to other species in the Diadema species group; can be separated from A. diadema by the shape of the base of the rostrum; can be separated from A. gracilipes by the presence of a groove on the major chela and a tooth on the merus of the third legs; and can be separated from A. pugnax by the lengths of the first two articles of the second pereopods (Banner 1953). The type specimen had broad red transverse bands on the body (Banner 1953).
