Alpheus hoplites belongs to the Edwardsii species group within the genus Alpheus. Type locality: South Tuamoto Island (reported in Anker 2001), types stored at the Muséum national d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France (MNHN). Type: MNHN Na 2508. For additional descriptions, see Poupin 1998.
Depth range intertidal to 10 m depth, possibly on hard bottoms (Poupin 2008).
Along with Alpheus serenei, this species has a bidentate dactylus in posterior pereopods; the two species can be separated by the presence of unarmed orbital hoods and basicerite with a spine (in A. serenei) (Tiwari 1963).
