Alpheus hutchingsae belongs to the Edwardsii species group within the genus Alpheus (Banner and Banner 1982). Named after the collector, Dr. Patricia Hutchings of the Australian Museum. Type locality: Lizard Island, Queensland, Australia (Banner and Banner 1982), types stored at the Australian Museum (AM). Holotype: AM P. 27252, allotype: AM P. 27253.
The allotype and holotype were colected from 35 ft depth, from a solid reef rock habitat with encrusting sponges and algae (Banner and Banner 1982).
Maximum body size is 11 mm total length (Banner and Banner 1982). Morphologically similar to A. hippothoe, A. serenei, A. georgei, and A. euchiroides, but can be differentiated by the confluence of the orbital margins with the rostral margin and by the relatively smaller number of spines on the third legs (propodus)(Banner and Banner 1982).
