Alpheus cythereus Banner and Banner, 1966

Alpheus cythereus belongs to the Brevirostris species group within the genus Alpheus (Banner and Banner 1966). The species is named after Bougainville's original name of Tahiti "Nouvelle Cythere," in reference to earlier specimens collected in this locality. Type locality: Phuket, Thailand (Banner and Banner 1966), types stored at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution (USNM). Type: USNM 120406.
This species has been collected in coral rubble in intertidal areas (Banner and Banner 1966).
Maximum body size is 16 mm total length (male holotype, Banner and Banner 1966). Morphologically similar to Alpheus pubescens, A. sauvensis, and A. platyunguiculatus, but can be distinguished by the strongly curved fingers of the large chela (Banner and Banner 1966).
