Alpheus mitis Dana, 1852
Alpheus mitis is an Indo-West Pacific snapping shrimp that belongs to the Diadema species group within the genus Alpheus. Banner and Banner (1983) expressed some doubt about the separation of A. mitis and A. paracrinitus; based on this, Chace (1988) and others suggest that A. mitis is known only with certainty from its original description by Dana (1852) in the the Balabac strait. Alpheus mitis belongs to the Diadema species group within the genus Alpheus (Banner and Banner 1982). Currently a valid species, but taxonomic status problematic. Banner and Banner (1983) expressed some doubt about the separation of A. mitis and A. paracrinitus; based on this, Chace (1988) suggested A. mitis was only known with certainly from the holotype (missing) described by Dana from the Balabac strait. Maximum body size is 7.0 mm CL (Chace 1988). Morphologically similar to Alpheus bengalensis, A. alpheopsides, A. paralpheopsides, A. tenuipes, and A. paracrinitus; see Knowlton et al. (2008) for more details.
