Alpheus lanceostylus (A. H. Banner, 1959)

Alpheus lanceostylus belongs to the Macrocheles species group within the genus Alpheus (Banner 1959). Type locality: Pearl and Hermes reef, Hawaii (Banner 1959), types stored at the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii (BPBM). Type: BPBM 2737 (holotype and paratype destroyed in a fire). For additional descriptions, see Banner and Banner (1981).
The type series was thought to have come from intertidal reef flats (Banner 1959); one specimen was collected from a cave at 7 m depth (reported in Banner and Banner 1981); depth ranges from intertidal to 60 m depth (Poupin 2008).
Maximum body size is 28 mm total body length (male holotype, Banner 1959). Morphologically similar to other species in the "A. hailstonei" species complex, but can be easily separated by several characters including the broad second article of the antennular peduncle, the relatively long stylocerite, and the closure of the major chela (Banner 1959).
